The Machine Shop
The Machine Shop and is located in Sausalito, CA. The Machine Shop building and site is located within the former W.A. Bechtel’s Marinship Corporation’s shipyard. The Marinship Corporation’s shipyard employed approximately 75,000 people, almost a third of which were female, and constructed an astounding and unprecedented total of 93 Liberty Ships in 3½ years for the nation’s World War II efforts from 1942 to 1945. The Machine Shop building represents a utilitarian industrial architectural design and is one of the last remaining buildings constructed by the Marinship Corporation in 1942. A 27,500 square foot, two-story, wood-post-and-beam building clad in plywood sheathing and capped by an undulating bowstring truss roof, the Machine Shop was the lifeblood of the of the shipyard by working in cooperative and coordinated harmony with all crafts related to the shipyard’s maritime activities. Eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, this vacant and slowly degrading (roof leaks) Machine Shop needs your help. Your vote will help us with preservation advocacy to get the word out on the Machine Shop’s history to help future generations learn about of this era of Sausalito’s rich shipbuilding history. As “ROSIE the RIVETER” said, “WE CAN DO IT!”
