The Hegeler Carus Mansion

The Hegeler Carus Mansion is worthy of preservation not just because it is a National Historic Landmark, but because it has historical significance worldwide. It is a precious gem for the city of La Salle, Illinois. The mansion remains true to its namesakes' values and the structure has not been significantly altered since being built more than a century ago. It began as a family home and has become "an example of high artistic achievement in architecture and interior design, and the site of historic accomplishments in industry, philosophy, publishing and religion," according to the Hegeler Carus Foundation. It continues to bring history to life for all age groups. Year-round the mansion is home to seminars, educational and cultural events, as well as tours and music and art programs. The building, like most old buildings, needs considerable rehabilitation. Since it is a national landmark all improvements have to be made to specification and are very expensive. The interior structure shows the wear of time and is sorely in need of restoration. The exterior looks magnificent but the roof is in the process of being replaced. Illinois's tumultuous weather makes restoration a constant battle for those maintaining the mansion.
