Saving Taos Pueblo
Taos Pueblo has been named a UNESCO World Heritage site, but unlike many world landmarks for whom this designation proffers a near-guarantee of preservation, Taos Pueblo has not been so lucky. If you step even 20 feet off the main tourist areas, you'll find entire sections where you can see every floor as the sidewalls have deteriorated so badly, and in such large sections, that the newly-formed school for preservation on the Pueblo can't keep up. This 1000 year old monument contains some of the best indigenous architecture in the US - utilizing passive solar design, functioning beautifully for a thousand years and still without electricity or running water, and is a LIVING landmark where tribal members live and work. The Pueblo is not rich like many of its neighbors who have extensive multi-million-dollar casinos, in fact her casino is tiny, and the only non-smoking one in the state of NM. There is no way that, their year-round farmer's market, and tourist ticket sales could ever provide the probably $100,000,000 required to preserve the entirety of this important piece of NM heritage. Taos Pueblo is made up of hard-working people just like you and me, who do their best with what they have. But they are small, have an aging population, and well... they just need a little love thrown their way. Please vote for Taos Pueblo, and let's get the pueblo's preservation school the $10,000 they need to keep working towards their goal of saving this incredible historical place. Thank you!!!
