Rufus Cage Elementary School

The Rufus Elementary School was built in 1910. The first teachers and students liveried their horses on the first floor and then climbed the stairs to their classes in the floors above. Prior to 1936 the stables were renovated into a cafeteria nd restrooms. The building housed the school until 1983 when a new school was built blocks away. It is located in the historic eastend of Houston where it has become a landmark today. It has been owned by the Houston Independent School District and recently been sold to the City of Houston at the urging of the Rufus Cage Historical Alliance (RCHA). The RCHA's intentions is to obtain funding to renovate the building in order for it to become the headquarters for nonprofit, preservation minded organizations such as Historic Houston, which conducts seminars on area history at Rice University. After the City took possession of the building the roof was weathered in from damages incurred during Hurricane Ike. A permanent roof is still needed. The building sits on the eastend of Houston, where the determination of it's early residents has changed hands to a new hard working populace. A populace whos's American dream maybe gone or alittle harder to come by, but remains firm in maintaining their homes and area. Keeping an iconic landmark such as the Rufus Cage Elementary School validates the worth that we all seek to achieve in our lives and areas we all call home. The dreams of builders of this elementery school are gone and it is my hope that the preservation of this building will awaken those virtues of educating the public within the same walls of a fine reminder of our historical begingings.
