Portland Custom House
The Portland Custom House [1901] was designed in the Office of James Knox Taylor , Architect of the US Treasury. The style of the Building was inspired by English Renaissance Buildings of the 17th and 18th Century. Technically this Building's Architecture is Italian Renaissance Revival. It was designated an Historic Landmark By the City Council in 1970 , and Listed on The National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The Custom House is one of the few fine buildings in Portland from the turn of the century. It's elegant composition , graceful lean proportions , and timeless materials speak to a golden age of Beauty. The building is currently being auctioned by the Federal Government. Lovers of Architecture are watching the auction in fear , as we hope against hope , that it is not sold to an ignorant tasteless villain. We beseech you to vote for this building , so that we can propose that the funds from this prize go to a local preservation organization which can create a larger awareness of the grandeur of this building and attract a new sympathetic and responsible owner.
