California Gold Rush Treassure

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Gamble Building in Big Oak Flat, California is considered one of the largest and finest examples of an 1852 California gold-rush stone building still standing. The building served as the center of commerce in Big Oak Flat during the hay-day of the California Gold Rush and was one of only two surviving structures after a catastrophic fire in 1863 that devastated the community. From 1852 to the 1930's its' many occupants included the Wells Fargo Express office, a Justice Court, the first U.S. Post Office in Southern Tuolumne County. The building was also living quarters for merchants providing every variety of goods a frontier community would need. In 2008 the Southern Tuolumne County Historical Society acquired the property and obtained Architectural & Historical Evaluation Reports as the first step in its' plan to restore the building to its' 1850's grandeur and open it as a museum to enhance tourism and economic vitality of Big Oak Flat and Southern Tuolumne County
