Buckhorn Baths Mesa, Arizona
The business opened as a service station in 1926 on US Highway 60, the Apache Trail. During expansion of the establishment in the 1930s, the owners discovered a mineral well on the property, and constructed Roman-style bathhouses and guesthouses for visitors. In the 1940s the baths played a role in bringing the New York Giants spring training camp to Mesa, leading to the eventual establishment of Mesa as a center for baseball spring training. The resort remained open and operated by its original owner until 1999. The buildings are remarkably intact, which helped their listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Here is a picture of Alice Sliger (front row, center) with the owners and some players of the San Francisco Giants in front of the Buckhorn Mineral Baths in the mid-1960s. Hall of Fame pitcher Gaylord Perry is pictured in the back row, fifth from the left. Perry’s father is pictured on Sliger’s right. We must save this amazing piece of or history! Travis Robinson~
