A Theater for Tomorrow

In 1941, theater architect John Eberson designed a small main street theater in Cohoes, New York. The Cohoes Theater was a public mainstay for more than three decades and was a gathering place to watch new films, attend high school graduations and catch up with friends. As people moved to the suburbs and the downtown area fell out of favor, the theater was shuttered and existed as a hallmark of mid-century prosperity. After years of neglect and a valiant effort to preserve the theater, the city demolished the beloved landmark as it was years beyond repair. With the downtown area beginning to thrive again, local residents should return to the theater lot and preserve not what isn't there anymore but what took place. The Cohoes Theater lot should once again welcome people to gather, talk about local issues and pull up a lawn chair for movie night under the stars. Because in a modern world, sometimes preservation means preserving memories over buildings.
