1838 Peter Augustus Jay House
The 1838 Peter Augustus Jay House is a magnificent example of the Greek Revival architectural style. It was the residence of the descendants of Founding Father John Jay as well as their freed slaves. Today it is an educational center for programs in American History, Environmental Stewardship, and African American Heritage. Once slated for demolition, it was left open to the ravages of vandalism but a group of citizens battled valiantly to save it and slowly are restoring it room by room. We have dedicated ourselves to make the restoration process a teachable moment - the building and its grounds are active classrooms where the art of preservation and green sustainability can be observed. But our project is not finished and $10,000 would help us complete our entry hallway and front door which first says "Welcome" to students of all ages. The power of architecture and craftsmanship to inspire and transform, that moment when a visitor draws in their breath and exhales "Wow," are all wrapped up in that first view. It is where we start learning, and begin the conversation of how where we dwell shapes our lives.
